Easier to see than say

Now are the late-summer glory-days of Clematis maximowicziana, paniculata, or dioscoreifolia, depending on where you find it.  But we'll spare you the Latin and invite your attention to what is commonly called Sweet Autumn Clematis.  This deciduous, herbaceous vine is a friendly and fragrant can grow up to 30' if supported by a structure it can cling to. Lean in to the screen. Can you smell it?

Unsupported, it will sprawl along the ground like a groundcover.  In late summer, the otherwise green, leafy vine is smothered with sweetly fragrant, 1" panicle flowers which bloom from late August into October.  When these flowers fade, they give way to attractive, plume-like seed heads.   Sweet Autumn Clematis blooms on new growth, so each winter or early spring the vine can be pruned back severely.  This keeps the plant from being a bully in the garden, or strangling and twisting the structures it climbs on.
